About Me

I am a freelance Spanish to English and French to English translator based in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, and I would like to offer my services.  I also offer tutoring services in Spanish on a one-to-one or group basis.

I have several years of experience as a volunteer translator for the Edmonton Immigrant Services Association, and after translating for the Association for some time, I was promoted to proofreader and proofread other translators’ work.

After many successful years of teaching Spanish, French, German, Latin, and English, I launched my freelance translation business.  I have a B.A. in Spanish from a Mexican university and an M.A. in French, as well as a B.A. in modern languages from a Canadian university.  I have studied and worked in Mexico and Ecuador and studied and lived in Paris, France.  I was born in a small town in eastern Ontario, where most people spoke French.  So I have been hearing and speaking French all my life.

I have gained additional insights into the translation industry by taking an online course in translation business practices.  I have also taken the courses “Associate-level Exam Preparation Tutorial” & “Introduction to Translation – Weekend Seminar” offered by the Association of Translators and Interpreters of Alberta (ATIA) in July, 2011.  My most recent training course was a workshop offered by ATIA:  “But It Still Reads Like a Translation!”,  an Interactive Workshop on Improving and Enhancing Language, Style and Cultural References in Translation, May 2014.

I have translated general as well as specialized documents in the areas of law and education.  I especially like the challenge of translating documents that use difficult language.  I have translated birth certificates, death certificates, marriage certificates, university transcripts, letters of recommendation, court orders, court settlements, newspaper articles, and many other types of documents.

I have a Master’s degree in library and information science and, in light of my research skills, am able to easily adapt to other specialized subject fields.

My home office computer equipment includes a desktop and laptop computer with daily backups, high-speed Internet access and a fax machine.  Before starting my translation business, I worked from my home office for thirteen years for a distance education center as a senior high school teacher of Spanish, French, and German.
